Make Your Party-By-The-Water Go Swimmingly

When people think of parties by the pool or on the water, they typically think of smoky barbecues and slushy drinks. But determining whether your party sinks or swims depends as much on following certain rules as it does on focusing on food and libations. For example, your guests won't have a good time - or good memories - if they end up badly sunburned. By following some simple guidelines, however, you and your guests can get wet - and wild - with no fear of the party capsizing.

Dive into these handy rules to navigate party success!

  • Lube job - Create a "spray booth" area for sunscreen application. Apply and reapply frequently. Use your pinkies to gently place sunscreen under your eyes.
  • Dog paddle - Don't assume dogs swim. Many do, but not all. Keep a close eye on pooches near the pool, lake or river.
  • Spoiler alert - Don't let foods that can spoil stay in the danger zone (between 40 degrees and 140 degrees Fahrenheit) for more than two hours…or one hour if the outdoor temperature is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Guard duty - Consider hiring a certified lifeguard to supervise your waterside party. You can find one through your local YMCA or health club. About $20 an hour brings peace of mind.
